When the Auckland Harbour Bridge was first designed, the plans included walking and cycle access. Unfortunately the planners of the time were shaving off bits and pieces from the plans and excluded cycling and walking access facilities. These wouldn't have cost much in terms of the overall cost at the time of construction. Now we have the opportunity to correct that big mistake.
When people can walk and cycle across the bridge, we'll be reducing car trips. Great for our planet, and individual cyclist/walkers' health.
According to the "Getacross" website:
If you've always wanted to ride your bike, walk or run across the Auckland Harbour Bridge, right now is the perfect time to make it happen. The outer lanes of the bridge (the "clipons") are about to get a major upgrade, making it the perfect time to add cycle and walking lanes too. If we miss this opportunity, we might never get another chance to get across. So take a look around, tell us what you think and tell your friends about www.getacross.org.nz.
