Use Modern Cloth Nappies
Modern Cloth Nappies (MCN) eliminate all the issues with old fashioned flat nappies )although once you get the hang of the old flats its not so hard) they usually have a stay dry layer, easy no pins closures like velcro or snaps, elasticated legs and waist for a good fit and did I mention that they are incredibly cute!
Some of the myths about cloth
* babies who wear cloth always have nappy rash - NO
* They are thick and bluky - NO depending on what you stuff them with
* you have to soak and scrub the mess - NO dry pail and little squirt
* they are bad for the enviroment because they use harsh chemicals to wash - NO 1/4 the recommended dose of eco friendly powder is best for washing nappies
* you have to wash them in boiling hot water - NO cold wash is fine
* you use so much extra water washing nappies - No more than an adult flushing a toilet
* they smell! NO dry pail with a lid and they dont stink
* they always leak - not if you have a correct fit
* they are expensive - nope even if you used a dryer they work out at 3c per change from 3mths to 3years versus a sposie which is about 30-50c per change
There are several different types of MCN ranging in price from $5 to $40 each, or you can be even more eco friendly and buy second hand. You can get all sorts of funky prints - Coth nappies are the new funky accessory for your baby, once you have used them you will want to buy outfits that show them off!

It is amazing how terrifying
It is amazing how terrifying stains will come out in sunlight! Its all new to me but we use NZ made HoneyChild-like Fuzzibunz but NZ made****
Also got bio-degradable disposables by Moltex- made from corn and breakdown in wormfarm or compost. I have enlisted the help of friends compost heaps to spread the load, they love it....probly
? earlier to toilet train save some $ as well as the earth
Apparently kids toilet train earlier in cloth nappies as they know what it is like to feel wet. Also Nature baby worked out that you save about $3000 dollars a child. worth thinking about.
Cloth nappies
Our 3 children were cloth nappy kids. Our first child only ever saw about 4 disposable nappies on his bottom during his entire nappy wearing life. Our second and third saw more disposables but still wore 90% cloth. Sure it was a bit more work but I felt that it was a commitment that the planet deserved. My kids all have reasonably sensitive skin but never got nappy rash. I can't say whether they toilet trained earlier due to wearing cloth but I can't see how wearing a disposable nappy or pull-up could give a child any sort of sensation about how uncomfortable it is to feel wet. I also knew mothers that didn't put anything on their kids except knickers during the warmer months if they were trying to toilet train them.
nappy rash & trial packs
My children only get nappy rash when I put them in disposables - they have absolutely no nappy rash when in their cloth nappies. I hate it when I have to use disposables and they get that horrible silicone stuff on their bottoms! I'm sure all the stuff the use to make them can't be good for their skin.
Also buy NZ made where you can - there are a few awesome mums out there in NZ who are doing there bit for the environment by making and selling cloth nappy systems here in NZ - I'm sure that they can't make much money out of it (I've become a local agent for one of the mum's up north and the money's just rolling in lol!) but worth it to convince more people to use cloth - or at least get them to give it a go! If you have friends you are trying to 'convert' message me if you want more info on trial packs that might help convince them! I love that each person we can convince to use cloth instead of disposables makes such a huge impact on our landfills.
MCNs
Cannot rate MCNs high enough- they have been such a cool addition to our lives in more ways than one! We use a combination of fitteds with covers and a few pockets, but boy is it addictive!
Yay for MCN. Better for the
Yay for MCN. Better for the environment, better for your pocket and oh so cute! :)
No kids yet but...
My husband and I are horrified at the amount of disposable nappies our child-bearing friends go through. While we don't have children yet (and won't for a while), we have always agreed that cloth nappies are the way to go. Serial disposable diaper users - for shame! Such a massive waste of plastic which sits for up to centuries in land fills. And don't forget the excretion which causes methane to build up and contribute to the large amounts of methane generated by covered landfill.
We've also made the switch
We've also made the switch to cloth nappies, whatever we can do to help the environment we've done especially with our garden and only growing what we'll eat like vegetables etc, having a compost pile for nutrients. My wife and I are alway doing what we can i know she loves to be outdoors in the garden so this mothers day i got her a whole new set of garden tools as her gift
