Use a hand-mower rather than a petrol one

I use a hand-mower for our lawn, just got a "new" one from The Supershed for $10. It was a bit rusty, but does a great job! Our old one was broken past repairing, but even that was at least 20 years old and well used.
A hand mower saves petrol in it's own use, also no trips down to the gas station in your car, saving more petrol. Cheap to service, and in fact many service places will pick-up. They're also quiet to run so no noise pollution or exhaust pollution. They do require a small amount of oil for lubrication and maybe the occasional rinse, but that's it!

hand lawn mower

love one, where do we get one? What is supershed , for us country bumpkins?

where to get a hand mower

We got ours secondhand at the local lawnmower repair shop, "Cycles and Mowers" - you still see small repair shops like this in some neighbourhoods. We take ours back to the shop about once a year for sharpening and servicing. When we mow regularly every couple of weeks, it doesn't take any longer to mow than it used to with an electric lawnmower. Takes a bit longer if we let the grass grow long.

great idea for small lawns

You can buy new wizzy ones still at most hardware type stores like Mitre 10 or Bunnings. Garage sales or 2nd hand stores are probably the best bet though for getting a good old fashioned made to last model. We have one in the shed but it would take a couple of days to mow our lawn with it and then it would be time to start again!
They would be ideal though if you only had a small lawn as a lot of town folk do and excellent exercise.

Good idea!

Using a hand-mower is a great idea! My family have never had a motor one and it hasnt caused any problems for us, its not easier using a motorised one so whats the point!

Go the Hand-mowers!

Alternatively, A garden to graze in, is a nice substitute for a lawn to mow. Some landlords don't seem to appreciate entire back lawns being ploughed up for cultivation, and so a hand-mower is pretty... handy. :-)

that I should get a hand mower as I mowed our lawn yesterday. I wonder how much more effort it would take - anyone in the Wairarapa got a hand mower that I could try on our bumpy and un-even lawn?

Bye bye front lawn

Exactly -- why restrict yourself to the back lawn? I just took over half of the front lawn with an organic vege garden. I got my push mower sharpened and set this year, and now I can cut all the rest of the grass in under an hour every 2 weeks.

What front lawn?

We don't have one at all, and the back lawn is required for small boys to play on. Instead I've turned part of the area next to our shed into a new vege patch.
