Use 100% Post-consumer Recycled Paper
Paper is one of the greatest drivers of deforestation worldwide. Globally, over 15 million hectares of forest are destroyed each year. Across the Tasman in Australia, woodchipping for paper production continues to drive the destruction of native forests, with over three quarters of all trees being woodchipped.
When these forests are logged, vast amounts of carbon are released into the atmosphere - 90% of the carbon stored in old growth forests logged for paper is released within 3 years. Globally, landclearing and deforestration account for around 20% of our carbon emissions.
Internationally, illegal logging is widespread and can make it impossible to determine where paper fibre comes from. Many imported papers come from areas tropical rain forest logging has caused human rights abuses and devastating forest fibres.
Buying 100% post-consumer recycled paper is the best way to minimize the impacts of paper consumption
There are three categories of paper that can be used as feedstocks for making recycled paper: mill broke, pre-consumer waste, and post-consumer waste.
Mill broke includes off cuts from a virgin paper mill and is not considered to be truly recycled paper.
Pre-consumer waste is material that was discarded before it was ready for consumer use.
Post-consumer waste is material that was discarded after actually being used by a consumer.
An easy step toward reducing carbon emissions is to make sure that any paper used in your home or workplace is 100% PC recycled.
