Turn off computer screens

When not in use, turn off computer screens. Encourage those around you to turn off their screens.

Or the whole thing

Alternatively, turn off the actual computer. It is a myth that booting it up every morning uses more power than leaving it on all night.

Quite true, but not always

Quite true, but not always the main concern of the user who may consider the long bootup time with certain operating systems a great irritant.

What bothers me is the point at which the computer is switched off. I can switch it off safely if I get down on hands and knees with my somewhat painful joints and get in behind to use the switch on the back of the computer. But if I switch off at the wall or the multi-box I will inevitably at some point destroy my computer power supply on switch-on. One would think the capacitor across the computer switch would also protect against surge or spiking further back along the line, but apparently not as I have destroyed 3 power supplies so far.

Another issue is the number of little black power bricks on the multiboard that go on leaking power even when the apparatus they run, such as one of my LCD screens, is separately switched off. Therefore I only buy switchable multiboards now, preferably those without their own mains indicators.

These points have been discussed here before but unfortunately, when a bright idea is made a pledge, the previous discussion gets disconnected.

Computers in labs

Not just the screens but I'm very embarrassed to say that at my university the computers don't get turned off at night. 100s of computers just stay on after hours to provide instantaneous availability the next day but what about the environment?! I've walked up and down so many times turning them off - it really is time others started doing the same!

Standby

While I don't turn off my computer at home I now put it on standby. I always turn off my screen and speakers when not using them. All a saving.

LocalCooling.com

I installed free software from http://www.LocalCooling.com on all my company workstation computers. It's easily configurable and I've set it up to shut off monitors after 5 minutes of inactivity and turn off computers after 2 hours.

It's also got a cool system tray icon that tells you the equivalent of how many trees and barrels of oil you've saved.

Computer screens

How about you just turn the hole computer off!
If your not using it why does it need to be on?

If your computer is going to

If your computer is going to be incative for 15 mins it is power saving to turn it off - I have microsoft and there is a setting in the computer that will do this for you - so if I walk away to do something and forget to come back my computer turns its self off!
