Store alternative energy in the grid
The most expensive part of an alternative power plant i.e. wind, solar or water are the batteries. They have to be replaced every 10 years or so. And they cost an arm and a leg.
What if the government would force the power companies that they will have to allow everybody to feed energy back into the grid. Technically no problem. You would have a meter in your house which would measure what you produced and what you used. You would either have to pay the balance or would get some money back if you would have produced more than you used.
No need for expensive batteries!

Great idea- what can we do
Great idea- what can we do to support this?
Cheers,
This is already being done
This is already being done by a number of individuals and environmentally conscious organisations. Overseas huge subsidies are being paid to owners/installers of these systems.
Contact Energy offers a Net Billing option where they pay you the same for your Grid Tie exports as they charge for our electricity imports. Unfortunately two meters are required by the Electricity Commission. One for imports and one for exports, so that is an additional cost as well.
The cost to install these systems is significant (>20k for a 1kW system), so you do not install grid tie to make money.
The system I installed was for a GST registered company set up for the purpose. A great way to reduce ones tax liability!
Best bang for your buck however is Solar Hot Water... A far better return on the investment
