Plant fruit trees

Plant your own fruit trees, in a couple of years you'll have the beginnings of the best fruit you've ever tasted. Tree ripened fruit is much nicer than stuff that's picked early and then freighted. There won't be any freight costs, most pests can be dealt with naturally and you'll save money on your grocery bill.
Some ideas of trees to plant: Plum, peach (the older varieties are more disease resistant), almonds, apples, pears, lemons etc.
I've replaced a number of unproductive trees with productive ones as the existing trees have died, I've also got rid of a number of roses in favour of fruit trees along the fence line.

Absolutely! We have just planted 6 apples, 3 pears, 4 feijoa and 4 citrus - no more chemical sprayed fruit for us (well, have to still buy organic for the next two or so years) :o)

Excess Fruit

With 4 feijoa and 6 apples, you'll end up with fruit for africa! Get a dehydrator. Drying the excess makes fantastic fruit chews 100% fruit. Store them in the fridge as they don't take up much room and last for up to a year. Great for the times of year when there is no fruit on the trees.

Fruit trees are great..

..but not surprisingly its pretty time consuming gathering fruit and doing something useful with it. You are better to only have one of a type of fruit but try to have trees that fruit at different times so everything is not ready at once. It's helpful also to have animals to feed all the spoilt stuff to ( we have 2 pigs that love fruit). Its amazing how many people just let the fruit drop on the ground and rot.
We have one feijoa tree...and one is enough!

Best time to plant

We've just bought a property in Rai Valley, Marlborough, and are planning on planting lots of fruit and nut trees. We are currently in France and don't know the local climate, and would really appreciate any advice from someone about when the best time to plant would be. Thanks for your help.
