Plant a forest
PLEDGE: Plant a forest
Protecting forests and planting new trees contributes to the absorption of carbon dioxide from the air. Plant trees in your garden, join in community re-vegetation projects, replace that concrete backyard with vegetation.
Make sure that any wood products (furniture, paper etc.,) is sourced from plantation forests or certified sustainable forestry.

Tree planting
Last weekend we planted a Pohutukawa and a Magnolia tree in our garden. Not only it helps the environment, it also makes you feel good and rooted!
And I planted 2 big cabbage trees and a kowhai.
Natives are great in their natural climate and fantastic food resources for native birds too.
Our garden
Over the past couple of weekends we have planted 3 cabbage trees, 2 pittosporums and numerous other non-native trees in our garden.
It's nice to know that planting your garden helps the environment in several different ways.
The birds benefit, we benefit and the air benefits.
:-)
Planting trees
Don't forget to water all those trees you've planted! The ground gets dry pretty quickly at this time of year. I'm giving my new trees about half a bucket a day whenever there hasn't been much rain for a couple of days.
Planting a tree is just the beginning - your tree doesn't count unless you make sure it stays alive!
food forest
Consider planting a complete eco system - fruit and nut trees with an understorey of vines; berryfruit; perennial herbs and vegetables. This can be done on a small scale with just one dwarf fruit tree with underplantings. We recommend a book called Edible Forest Gardens by Dave Jacke isbn 1-931498-79-2
Planting trees
Since we've bought our place we've removed some trees, but we've also replaced them, mostly with fruit trees so we get some benefit out of them. They also have the advantage that they are all deciduous so don't cut out the light in winter. We've also looked after the trees that were here already that were useful like the 2 blackboy peaches and the silk tree.
I would love to add more trees, but unfortunately we've run out of room; I'm trying to work out where I could put an almond tree, but there's nowhere to put it without ripping out an established tree.
Planting trees
Last week our neighbours threw out a Pittasporum tree with the roots attached. We managed to salvage it and we planted it in the garden; it is striving...(hopefully it will survive!)
