PLEDGE: Eat sustainably
Buy as much of your fresh fruit and vege from local sources. Better yet, try to go as organic as possible. Start growing some of your own vegies if you don't already. Switch to a vegan diet - it has the most minimal impact on the environment in terms of resource use. If that seems too extreme, start by considering meat and dairy products as treats rather everyday food - as most societies used to and still do in less afluent times. Your food choices really can make a big difference to your impact on this fragile planet!

Eat sustainably
Quite right. Reduce erosion, silting of waterways, and demand on land among other things. I've been a vegetarian, mostly vegin, for 47 years. It's easier now because there are more about. I used to cop stern disaproval and sidelong looks but most people accept it or approve. Even animal farmers are less aggressive about it:) Most restaurants can come up with something marvellous even if no vegetarian selections are on their menus. At a dinner a few days ago the pride of flesh eaters had to agree my dish was the best of the lot! That often happens. General good health is a not inconsiderable benefit as long as a variety of veges are eaten together and one keeps up with the vitamin B which we used to get from bacteria in the soil, I've heard, but now we wash most of that off, being more hygenically minded..

To the Farmers Market
Good idea angelee,
Tomorrow (the 10th of November) the Climate Rescue Bus will be in Dunedin, so before the open day begins (at 10am in the Octagon) some of us will be heading down to the farmers market at the Railway station to stock up on locally grown fresh fruit and veges. Yum.

Treats
The idea of dairy and meat being a treat is a good one! Children are drilled from day 1 of their lives that you have to drink lots of milk and I agree it is important as I didn't eat much when I lived overseas and broke my ankle twice, I beleive from lack of calcium. This is one of the reasons I am averse to going completely vegan- I am already vegetarian.
