tap water........
Good one... and lobby to get water deflourinated at source!
I dont entirely agree. Yes
I dont entirely agree. Yes we should be drinking tap water but without the flouride the deteration of ones teeth is evident. I know this as I am now in auckland with flouride added to the water and was in Napier without flouride for 5 years
Your teeth shouldn't
Your teeth shouldn't deteoriate without flouride in the water as long as you brush them and use flouride toothpaste. Many people don't want chemicals in their water, but if flouride is added they don't get the choice. They do get the choice to brush their teeth though.
if you dont like
clorinated flouridated chemical filled tap water then think about collecting your rainwater for drinking tap water!

Plastic Water Bottles
Not only am I going to drink tap water (a lifetime habit - it's pretty good growing up in New Zealand!) but I have also stopped buying and drinking from plastic bottles. Re-using plastic bottles is a way of recycling but the plastic can break down over multiple uses (especially if they are washed in hot water) and get into your body. It does damage in there!
If you don't buy plastic bottles in the first place there is no need to put extra pressure on recycling stations. You can drink out of a glass which is reusable and safe for your body. If you don't have a glass around you can always use your hands!
Great article on making choice around bottled vs. tap water!
this is a fascinating story...

Rain water
I live on Waiheke and drink rain water collected from the roof. If we all collected rainwater, even if it was just for use in our toilets, showers, and washing machines (ie, not for drinking) we would greatly reduce the pressure on our rivers. Rainwater is great, it definitely tastes and smells better than piped water. But saying that, I drink tap water at work and it's pretty good.
Really, the fact that we live in a country where we all have clean, safe drinking water piped to our homes is very lucky indeed. There is no reason to buy bottled water in New Zealand.
In many parts of the world women and children must walk kilometres every day to collect water that may not be safe to drink, or that they have to pay for.
taste and "chemicals"
Tap water is more palatable to many after boiling or standing (in glass not plastic!) in sunlight (just as you age water for fishtanks, you can age it for yourself)... Add lemon juice (hopefully from home grown lemons as they taste so much better it's unbelievable) for a great tasting, cleansing drink.
Tap water is cheaper too!
At the current cost of bottled water the humble kitchen tap must look like a good idea. I can only imagine how much money some people waste on it. I am seeing more and more articles now from overseas about how councils are starting to remove bottled water from meetings etc. I imagine once the plastic bag war is over, bottled water will be next. The only place I see a need for it is in countrys with dangerous water supplies.
