Don't use InSinkErators and food waste disposers!

Just don't do it!

Lets all stop using food waste disposers even if your kitchen has one instaled! And don't go installing any new ones!

Instead just set up a compost bin in the courner of your garden, place a container next to the sink for all food scraps (EXCEPT meat, citris fruit and white bread because it kills the worm so Im told? sound right everyone???) And just clear the container into your compost bin each night!

The added bonus is you get lovely compost to add to your garden which is great for the plants!

InSinkerators etc

Worms love meat and can cope with white bread so long as they have plenty of other stuff. They don't like citrus, very spicy things and lots of onions and garlic. They will also demolish small bones eg chicken carcass especially if ground up with your waste disposal unit first. This is the only time using one of these makes sense and you need to disconnect it from your greywater system first and put a bucket underneath.

I use a bokashi system.

I use a bokashi system. they're great if it's just you in the house and you're apartment based. Check out http://www.bokashi.co.nz/. And check these guys out to learn more about composting - http://www.kaipatiki.org.nz/.

Also, have a look at this next link for other free composting courses as well as tonnes of info in the menu for other ways to make a difference at home. http://www.nscc.govt.nz/our_environment/Waste_Minimisation/composting-courses.htm
