Dig a Vege garden
PLEDGE: Dig a Vege garden
By producing your own vegetables you can be assured that there are no nasty chemicals (sprays and pesticides) on them and the food miles are 0.
It takes next to no time to manage a garden start with something simple like potatoes or carrots.
Its a really good and fun educational tool for the children and they can help digging the weeds and harvesting the produce.
If you have no space for a garden, then you can create your garden in anyting from plastic buckets, 2 or 3 plastic bags inside each other or even a couple of cardboard boxes - they usually last long enough for produce

Weeds are wonderful
Let a bit of your garden grow wild and weedy - either with weeds you choose (like native: puha, Cooks scurvy grass [nau], OR borage, nasturtium, mustard or similar) or those that just appear - this gives wildlife (lizards, butterflies, wetas...) a sanctuary and helps to clean the air with the rapid plant growth.
weeds are edible too
i visited my farmers market recently and found a person making pesto from weeds - chickweed and puha to be more precise - it tasted fantastic! the weeds were used in a pesto recipe instead of basil, and the pinenuts were substituted with her homegrown walnuts - quite inspiring! i am sure there are other edible weeds around too...
Since last season i've been
Since last season i've been trying to get my property well most parts like the gardens all around the house and other areas to overgrow with herb spices and veggies, i buy seeds in bulk i've put down some good top soil and mixed it in with the soil already there and plant tons of seeds each year well not really plant more like sprinkle them heavily in the areas then turn the soil a bit, i've been getting good results and eventually hope to have all these areas jam packed with herbs, and veggies. Having gone to greece so often and having an apartment there the coolest thing I think there is are orange trees through out the neighborhood. Picture walking down some city block with orange trees and lemon trees so I took that idea to my house here in the states and am trying to grow anywhere I can within reason. There's nothing like cheap herbs and vitamins from your own garden knowing it's organic.
Dig a vegie garden
Dandelion
I think everyone who has soil should be growing their own vegies. If you don't have soil, buy at Farmers markets.
Growing our own food could be one of the biggest things we can do to save the planet. During world war 2 our grandparents in Britain and USA and Canada had Dig for Victory and Victory gardens, where everyone but everyone grew vegies, kept a pig or a goat and by the end of the war 80% of food was homegrown (not imported and using fuel) Today we a facing a worse disaster than World War 2..therefore I have this spring increased my gardens by 100% in an effort to feed my family...5 adults. I have so far planted, spuds, carrot, lettuce, tomatoes, eggplant, capsicum, strawberries, loquids, cape gooseberries, corn, herbs, cabbage, broccolli, leeks and so on. First time gardeners should try a potato patch..fresh and sweet home grown spuds! Yum.
Vege Pest
Ok, I have aphids on my lettuce and capsicums and caterpillers on my brocolli - any natural ways of dealing with these pesky pests? I was thinking nasturium or marigolds. I've got tomatoes and potatoes in also - what should I plant with those to prevent any issues?

vegie pest
Dandelion
Lisa , for aphids try 1 tsp baking soda to a litre of water , mix and spray aphids.worth a try..I read it somewhere the other day.
Tomatoes thrive with asparagus, basil, beans, cabbages, carrots, celery, chives, cucumber, nasturtium (also makes a good ground cover to keep soil drying out)onion, parsley, pepper, marigold.
Basil repels flies and mosqitos, improves flavour and general health of tomatos. Dill retards their growth and do not plant tomatos near corn or potaoes.
Potatoes..do not plant near tomatoes (blight can transfer). They grow well with beans, carrot, celery, corn, marigold, peas and petunia.
When planting plant with comfrey leaves to protect from scab.
Potatoes do not like cucumber,parsnip,pumpkin,sunflower,fennel.
I have plant 3-4 coriander plants near my potato to repel aphids, spider mite and potato beetle.
Good luck...I am trying all thise suggestions this year myself.
Vege pest
Marigolds are good. Another thing that will help is having ladybugs in your vege garden. They'll eat the aphids. :-)
Vege garden
My vege garden is my favourite hobby and a source of relaxation. We get the added benefit of vegetables to eat at the end. Now the Wellington region isn't the most favourable for its growing season but we always manage a variety of veges. I too have expanded the gardens by 100% and am looking forward to the beans, eggplant, cucumbers, gherkins and onions which are all new for me. Can't wait. Yum yum.
More vege's
I've recently increased the amount of vege garden I have to enable me to grow my own corn, I'm growing beans up the corn as well to take better advantage of the space. The one thing I hate about vege gardening is the weeds like my garden even more than my veges do! I don't enjoy weeding, but I do love runner beans and peas. There will be places in most gardens where you can sneak in veges, I'm going to put some carrots in my flower garden, and I bet no-one will notice.
Get the kids weeding!
My younger brother (Priyal) told me a story the other day - he and his friend were playing ball and it went to the neighbour's yard so they went and asked if they could collect it. Priyal told me the neighbour was really friendly and had said of course you can collect it and he had also offered the kids to help him in the garden. Priyal continuously emphasised how kind the neighbour was and said they had so much fun helping him in the garden!! They preferred the gardening over playing ball! I was surprised and so proud of my little boy! Maybe your neighbours have kids? :P
Vege garden
We started our garden a couple of weeks back. Not only is it healthy and cheap, our garden is going to be a colourful one aand my little brother just loves his new gloves and helping us dig it up! Full family fun! Can't wait to say everything on the table was grown right here!
Just take care if your house
Just take care if your house fronts a busy road. More than just CO_2 comes out the exhaust...
If you have a vege garden extend it
I've just spent the weekend digging over a new area and am seriously looking at some of my flower areas for veges. Carrots would make a great border plant!
yep!
red and green lettuce make great additions to your flower garden too Sable.
I think its the English cottage garden where you plant vegies and flowers all together, and apparently this is almost like companion planting.

Ahh, luxury
I love my vege and herb gardens!! Spending time caring for them is so meditative and peaceful. Eating and cooking with things you have grown yourself is absolute luxury!
I can't wait to get seeds
I can't wait to get seeds planted it's finally the season where I am, since i dont have a big garden i use all the spots around the house between bushes next to the stairs etc to get veggies planted. I love fresh tomatoes, cucumber, eggplant etc their perfect for my greek dishes. All winter i shop at wild by nature a natural food store in NY. I was trying to find something for my mom and found the perfect mothers day gifts it's only about a week away.
