Become a one-car family

21 pledges

Sit down with your spouse or partner and figure out how you can take turns with one car. Figure out what days you can work from home or be at home with children, carpool with a friend or neighbour, or walk or cycle to walk, school or kindy. Figure out how much money you'll save and what you'll spend it on. Will you save enough to stretch to taxis for those once-a-month days when you both need a car?

You'll find this pledge easier if you've already chosen to live near work and use local schools and kindies and shops, or to live near easy public transport routes.

Just manufacturing a car uses 80 barrels of oil - roughly equivalent to driving 120km a week for the life of the vehicle - so even if you end up doing the same amount of driving, it's still good to cut down to one car.

thanks for the info...

We have finally made this happen, and i must say i am getting fitter! and my little ones really enjoy our once a week bus ride too - they see it as a real adventure! My husband is enjoying his bike more too...I had no idea how draining car manufacturing is on our environment...
