Ask your council for e-waste recycling

17 pledges

Electronic waste is one of the fastest growing waste streams around the world, and most computers have a life span of only 5 years!

In New Zealand the bulk of redundant electronic equipment is being landfilled. Computers contain an array of substances such as lead, mercury, cadmium, hexavalent chromium or brominated flame retardants. These have all been shown to be harmful to humans and damaging to the environment." Not to mention the pollution of our drinking water.

Encourage your council to set up e-waste collection sites, and to facilitate and sponsor initiatives like last September's e-day.

There's also a list of places for old computer parts listed here.

Recycling

Porirua has a fantastic place right next door to our landfill called Trash Palace. Not only does it take the regular stuff like paper, cardboard, plastic, glass and clothing; but it is also a place to take your pre-loved electrical equipment (including computers). They strip off all off the nasty stuff. They also take polystyrene which is wonderful. We have taken things up there that we no-longer need and they have been cleaned up or repaired and made available for someone else. They do say that one man's rubbish is another man's treasure.

Recycling too

Christchurch has a similar store called 'The Super Shed' - its not right next to the dump though which would be a good idea. But the super shed also takes things people don't want and sell them on to others- you can get ome real bargins there and its helping the environment at the ame time!

E-waste

There are a few companies in NZ that will recycle computers and/or e-waste in enviromental ways, sometimes at a small charge. Nearly all of it going off shore. At least they care what happens to it.

But the reality of e-waste recycling in NZ is, its a great big joke. NZ is at least 20 years or more behind the rest of the world when it comes to recycling e-waste.

What NZ needs is its own e-waste recycling facility to recover the different commodities and then sell them on.
Until such time, e-waste will be continued to be land- filled.
