IDEA: Stop farming
if we stopped farming, New Zealands rivers and lakes would still be people-friendly and allow us to swim in them!! Also people would become more healthy as cutting saturated fat content out of our diets will decrease the risk of coronary heart disease, cancer etc and lots of other diseases and illnesses. the level of obesity would also drop, meaning it would be easier for people to walk places instead of being too lazy or tired to drive etc.. if travelling over long distances public transport is advisable!!! What about NZ's economy?!
I don't think that it would do NZ any good to stop farming!- think what would happen to the economy!
I think asking for more environmentally friendly solutions for the way farm would b a far more reasonable request.
Agreed!
completely agree with the above comment.
We do need to encourage sustainable farming practices in NZ, but not quit farming. Then we will just be importing food from overseas, exporting our problems there!
(P.S. farming is not just animals. veges are farmed too - and grains - and some of the farming practises for those things can also be very unsustainable!)
Animal-less-farm
Hiya, I agree with this bright idea, in fact, I wish I'd said it first.....but I was too scared.
Who says that a healthy economy translates to a healthy environment?
Economic motivations drive environmental destruction, including climate change.
Stop farming, and don't worry about the economy, the sooner we ditch it the better!

Let's be realistic
There's no way that we're gonna get NZ to become a farming-free-nation in the near future. Farming more earth-friendly crops than meat does still have an impact on the environment. I also think we need to be able to provide our own food for our country. There are a lot of things that we already import (e.g. mangoes, bananas) and we don't need to add to that.
It's a complicated issue (as is nearly everything to do with the reality of climate change and how to deal with it on a national scale) and we can't just say 'stop farming!' or 'don't stop farming!'.
If we took away farms altogether, we would actually be worse off. The population of the earth isn't getting smaller. We are packed in. People can't all grow their own food, there simply isn't enough room for it! It also wouldn't be efficient. We need farms to provide many people with food.
As a person who has never eaten meat, I would love to say 'stop eating meat!' as farming meat is more destructive to our home. This is not a realistic solution at the moment! We need to take baby steps. Walk before we try to run. Finding more sustainable ways to farm might be a first step.
