hi guys

I think a great way to reduce NZ's effect on the climate is to try and make our cities more enjoyable to bike, cycle, bus, and train around. If you agree with me then it would really good if you could register your support online at http://www.aucklandcity.govt.nz/council/projects/cbdproject/queenstspeedsay.asp for the Auckland City Council's idea to make Queen Street safer/more pedestrian friendly by lowering the speed limit to 30 km/hour.

Don't worry: you don't need to know heaps about transport in Auckland to to do this. There is only one, online question that will take you 30 seconds to fill out. The last plan to shut Queen Street entirely to private motorists failed because there wasn't enough public support for it. Let's not let that happen again :)

Cheers

It's pretty slow as it is.

The idea of closing Queen Street to public traffic is an excellent one.
Queen Street in Brisbane is a shining example of how well it works. The businesses on Brisbane's pedestrian-only Queen St are swarming with customers while the stalls, art displays and performers make the atmosphere truly electric. All of my friends and family who've seen it think it's an excellent idea.
Like so many other things, our Queen St fails where Brisbane's succeeds. Such a shame. Why are we so scared to copy the good things other countries do?

The idea of reducing Queen Street's speed to 30km/h would be a waste of time wouldn't it? The last time I was in Auckland and drove up it, it was so slow and gridlocked it took 15 minutes to get halfway up. I gave up and took a side-street out of there.
Making the street more cycle friendly would be a good thing, but personally I wouldn't ride my bike up there even if it had a cycle lane. You'd do more harm than good with all those diesel and petrol fumes knocking days off your life. I tried it on foot once, it was disgusting.

I say close the street from cars completely. Let the city come alive again.
