Every month we have what we call a "Barrier" night, named after Great Barrier Island. Whenever we go there we stay at a friends place that has no electricity.

So our "Barrier" nights back on the mainland are evenings spent with friends cooking (on the gas stove) and playing scrabble, all by candle light and a little battery powered radio for background music.

Of course it could be a very romantic affair having candles all over the house and balcony (don't forget the bathroom!). But my friends and I cook a dish each of the chosen theme for that evening (e.g. indian curry, tex mex etc) and share it all. And it will be good practice for the next earth hour. :) (www.earthhour.org)

I recommend you read this site on candle safety first though. http://www.candles.org/safety_candles.html
