People have been talking about 'no junk mail' stickers, which are clearly a good idea because they do make a big difference but I know there has to be a better way to eliminate this problem once and for all. I have an idea which could potentially make a big difference and stop companies sending us so much rubbish. What I was thinking was that instead of those 'no junk mail' stickers, if everyone stuck a sticker onto the junk mail they recieved saying 'return to sender' and put it in the post box. If enough people did this it would send a really strong message to companies that send unsolicited mail, because if we kept it up they would have no choice than to stop sending because instead of just clogging up our letterboxes, it would start clogging up the whole postal system! Please tell me what you think and if you'd be interested in doing this, thanks.

They won't notice

For that to work it has to be massively supported. The P.O. probably automatically slings such returns into a bin for disposal - too costly to return to sender. To get the bosses to notice you have to get publicity too.

There is one thing that they do notice - if you withdraw your custom, but you still have to tell them why. They know that half their advertising works, they just don't know which half! (this is a saying in the industry). If you return their circulars at least they know you have noticed their main offer, maybe more.

How could you get the publicity that would need?

I think its brilliant idea if it worked!

But I also agree with Noel- if it was a small group they would be binned and unnoticed- so the question is how could you get the publicity you idea requires?

If I think of anything I will add it but nothing comes to mind yet.

getting noticed

i reckon there are lots of ways to get media and to generally get noticed. They all depend on getting action started though. Often you need to have been doing something for a while for people to pay attention.

So once you've got a few people agreeing to do it, maybe a streets worth etc, you could start with your local small media outlet and tell them what your plans are. Perhaps an idea is to collect lots of junk mail for a month say, and then tell the local paper to come along to a photo opportunity of you all putting them back in the post. Or even taking them to the business that sent them in the first place.

Or if you know of a local prominent person or celebrity in the neighbourhood, try and get them involved - media tend to take note.

Growing involvement is also noteworthy. Once you've got your street involved, try the intersecting street, and so on. Shows that other people are taking attention and the media like to report on things that have appeal.

You could also talk about what you are doing on websites like this, or to community networks such as sports clubs, plunkets, lions clubs, coffee clubs etc etc etc

basically doing what you want to and telling lots of people about what it is and why is a great way to get media to take notice..
