IDEA: Appliances
Standby power-turn it off.
Not using the computer, turn the switch off at the wall.
Finshed using the washing machine, turn the switch off at the wall.We use the machine maybe two hours per day and it stays on for 22 hours _ turn it off.
The stove, finished cooking dinner, turn the switch off.
It may take a few weeks to get the habit, but worth it.
Dishwasher..I do not have one..but turn it off when not in use, same goes for any appliance used for short times.

about 6 months ago we bought one of those centametre gadgets to check out where our energy was going. It was a revelation, while we were fairly efficient already there were still some areas we were being a bit lax and the meter really helped show us what was going on
this is my latest graph from the electricity segment of our bills

The first major drop in usage was simply due to switching off, washing machine, dvd, tv, dryer, phone chargers, computer. Everything gets turned off at the wall when it is not in use. Big difference huh!
the latest drop in the usage was due to our new fridge. We replaced our older fridge/freezer with just a straight fridge. We already have a chest freezer and it is a joy to have so much more fridge space for our family. A straight fridge is a lot more efficient as well, ours has a rating of 330 kwh per year
