Get yourself sorted for the Global Day of Action on Climate Change!
Global Day of ActionThe jury is now very much in on climate change. It’s now widely accepted that this is the single biggest threat that’s ever faced civilisation. Many of us have taken steps in our own lives to reduce our contribution to the problem, but it’s not often you get a day where everyone can band together and show that:
- We care about this crisis
- We’re prepared to do something about it.
December 8th is that chance.
The Global Day of Action on Climate will bring many thousands of people together right around the world to demand immediate and effective action from our political leaders in tackling climate change.
The 2007 United Nations Climate Change Conference will take place in Bali, Indonesia, between December 3 and December 14, 2007. These international climate talks - with representatives from over 180 countries attending - will shape the next stage of The Kyoto Protocol, the only global treaty that requires Governments to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions and slow climate change.
The objective of the Global Day of Action is to demonstrate to world leaders discussing our future at these climate talks that there is support all around the world for them to take urgent action on climate change.
Here in NZ, Be The Change is asking people all over the country to join in by spelling out personal messages that call for a climate friendly future.
Being a part of it is easy – just spell out what you want to say to our leaders on climate change, take a digital photograph of it, and email it to photos@bethechange.org.nz . Your picture message will contribute to voices from all around the world being heard in Bali in December.
What sort of message should I spell out?
Our leaders need to hear that New Zealanders want climate action. It’s still possible for that action to come about, so keep the messages positive and let the politicians know you expect them to deliver. Some possible messages might include:
Be The Change RocksSave the climate!
Climate action now!
Climate heroes please!
NZ climate leaders
Be The Change. Stop climate change.
Climate friendly future
We'll be hosting a slideshow of the images here as they come in.
How can I write my message?
You could spell out your message using something iconic to NZ (chocolate fish, jandals, etc), or relevant to your local group or area. You could use something that represents climate solutions to you (energy efficient light bulbs, bicycles…), or something that is characteristic to your community (if you leave near the coast, you could spell out your message in the sand, or use pebbles from the beach). You can do it alone, with your family or get together with your friends. You don’t have to stop at one either. When it comes to getting a point across, there’s no harm in repetition!
Why do I need to upload the picture to the Be The Change website?
This is the important bit - It’s by showing this broad concern that we can let our politicians and policy-makers, and our representatives at the UN Conference in Bali, know that we want to see some real action from them too.
How do I do it?
The chocolate fish say Save the ClimateAll you have to do is email your photo to photos@bethechange.org.nz
What Then?
While you’re posting your photo, take a minute to sign up to the Be The Change campaign. There’s lots of great ideas for reducing your carbon footprint at home.
Encourage friends and family to check it out as well, and to spell out similar messages calling for action. A climate friendly future will need all the help it can get!
There are other events around the country listed here.
