In Cuba it's illegal NOT to pick up hitch hikers in some situations!!!

Hitch hiking is a great way to save fuel and share what you've got with others. Not a bad way to meet interesting people either.

In Wanaka during the ski season we have dedicated turnout areas where skiers and boarders wait for a ride up the hill. Some people ask for a bit of cash for petrol but it's mostly just about giving people a ride up the hill. Of course there are still plenty of 1 person cars driving up and down and around.

I use a hand-mower for our lawn, just got a "new" one from The Supershed for $10. It was a bit rusty, but does a great job! Our old one was broken past repairing, but even that was at least 20 years old and well used.
A hand mower saves petrol in it's own use, also no trips down to the gas station in your car, saving more petrol. Cheap to service, and in fact many service places will pick-up. They're also quiet to run so no noise pollution or exhaust pollution. They do require a small amount of oil for lubrication and maybe the occasional rinse, but that's it!
