The year of the drought

As I sit here breathing a sigh of relief at the gentle rain falling outside, I am amazed at the stupidity of people and their use of water.

I admit that a drought in the Waikato is unheard of...but once we had gone for a couple of months without rain you would think people would have cottoned on to the issue and tried to save water...but no.
Councils have to be the worst offenders...they wait until there is no water before putting on sprinkler bans just because they don't want to upset anyone and I suspect they don't want the extra expense of spying on people breaking the rules.

It makes no sense.
I have seen people with sprinklers going who are watering the road, the footpath, the walls of their house...but not the lawn.
I heard of people in denial insisting sprinkler bans don't apply to in ground pop up sprinklers in their lawn.

Better that your lawn dies than you don't have water to wash in....really.

We live in the country, have one water tank and it has lasted all summer without us needing to refill it. There is nothing like being able to see all the water you have available to make you think twice about using it. I know a number of people who have had to fill their tanks once or twice this summer.
We are lucky to have a bore and that is used for filling troughs and watering the garden, but I certainly don't worry about watering the lawn..its all weeds anyway..why water weeds?

Its about time water was metered in Hamilton....and then at least everyone could see clearly how much they use (and waste)and it will cost them everytime they do.

My water saving tips:
- flush the toilet less
- don't shower if your not dirty and only once a day max
- don't wash clothes after one wear if they aren't dirty
- don't leave taps running
- boil the jug for hot water rather than run the hot tap
- forget about cleaning the car its a thankless job anyway
