It's often easier to be environmentally friendly when you live in the country..your options are greater...so I guess you should try to do more than your share to compensate for townies.
You control your water and sewerage for a starter, you have heaps of room for composting and can grow your own meat, veges and heat.
The downside is you often use more fuel for travelling (and all those farm toys) and more power for running pumps and electric fences etc.
We grow our own firewood and have a new efficient wood burner. ( I still think wood is better than heating via power and gas)
All food scraps get recycled through our pigs.
Even though we are rural we have recycling through our council - which is great!
We have planted heaps of fruit trees and lots of natives to encourage bird life.
We don't make trips into town unless we have to and we don't drive large pretentious SUV's.
The only things still to do are to put in a vege garden (I've just bought a rotary hoe to aide this) and a long term project of building a windmill to provide some power down at our pond.

RE: Helping at home - living rurally
Sounds great queen_of_denial, maybe you could post some photos of what you're doing?
sounds like us
We have been living rural for 9 years - but we are only 4mins away from the township :o)
Have you got a wood cooker? we are coveting a Rayburn with solar water and wetback but at about 30k to buy and install with 8 radiators.
We have just planted 100 coppicing wattles and have another 200 eucs to plant as a woodlot - hopefully in time for when we can afford the Rayburn!
