4 wheels bad

I went to the stockcars in the holidays and had a strong twinge of guilt at the mindless waste of fuel involved. I started thinking about whether there is any effort being made in this industry to improve its wastage of resources but a google search failed to unearth very much. This was the only article of much interest:

I shudder to think how much damage to the environment all the motor racing events that go on world wide every day are doing. Its not just all the actual racing either, its the transporting of all that gear around the country and the world. Not so good really.

Does anyone know of any positive steps being taken to work on this issue?
