We're taking the Be The Change Bus from Bluff to Northland. Along the way we'll be seeding the change as much as we can and seeking stories of people doing good things for the climate. This is our blog.
The Be The Change Bus Tour Blog
St. Peters Primary
Hello. This blog entry is coming to you from Sally. I am lucky enough to be the Schools Coordinator for the Be The Change Bus Tour.
Today we visited a great little school in Christchurch called St. Peters Primary. I had my keen team of Brooke and Aaryn with me to help with the day. We were met by a great teacher called Mrs. Barrie who had already got all her students looking at the website. The kids were interested to hear about our visit to their favourite authors’ house last Friday. It was great to arrive there and have them already know what Be The Change is and what we are up to!
That’s not all they know about either! When we visit a school we do a short presentation on climate change, what might happen, what makes climate change happen and we spend the most time on what we can all do about it to turn climate change around. These students at St Peters were really great at brainstorming what climate change is, they have a really good knowledge about the environment in general and they taught us a thing or two about mudfish and how climate change is affecting their habitat!
It was a real buzz to work with children like this who were so interested and engaged in the problems and solutions around climate change. We did quite in-depth brainstorms around how we can reduce our carbon emissions at home, in industry and around transport. Many of the students were able to put up their hands and make really good suggestions, all the other kids were listening and learning lots of little things we can do everyday to help fight climate change.
Then we did some scenario acting, where the students are provided with an everyday scenario and a fact and have to make the best choice for the climate, because they want to be Climate Hero’s. All the children did very well with this and were great actors and actresses!
We are talking to these schools not only about learning, but as one of the teachers at St. Peters said, about doing. It’s fine to learn the best thing to do but unless you actually do it, the benefit is not there. I am sure that St. Peters are going to continue with their studies around the environment and climate change and actually change how they do things! There was a lot of energy there to grow ideas and plans next year and I can’t wait to see how they go by checking them out here on the website.
